Abstract

BACKGROUND: The health and well-being of university staff are integral to their job performance and overall quality of life. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the health status of staff members at the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City, and explore the relationship between job-related factors and their health status.

OBJECTIVES: The study assessed the overall health status of staff of university of Benin, disparities in health outcomes considering specific demographics, and comorbidities present in the target population.

METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study assessed the health status of University of Benin staff in Benin City, employing both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A sample size of 422 participants was selected, representing a 77.86% response rate. The EQ5D-5L Questionnaire was used to gather data on socio-demographics, self-reported health, and visual analog scale. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, and ethical approval and informed consent were obtained, ensuring voluntary and confidential participation.

RESULTS: Overall health status of the target population ranked good (68%, n=422), poorer health outcomes were observed in females, respondents that were married, of advanced age, and higher education. The most prevalent comorbid conditions were hypertension and diabetes.

CONCLUSION: Findings from this study underscores the need for collecting subjective health perception as it revealed the health outcomes and co-morbid conditions prevalent in the target population and can guide the university’s administration in health policies implementation.
