 ABSTRACT

Water is essential to life and everyone depends on it to survive. However, unsafe water is a threat to life. Groundwater constitutes an important source of water for drinking. Groundwater is subject to contamination from both natural processes and human activities. Hence, the analysis of groundwater to ascertain its suitability for human consumption is of paramount importance. In this study water samples were collected from five sampling points in Ovbiogie Community and analysed for cadmium, chromium and manganese using the Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

(AAS) in a research laboratory in the Department of Chemistry, University of Benin. The acidity and alkalinity of the water samples were determined by titration. The values of chromium, acidity, and alkalinity in milligramme per litre determined in the samples were 0.04±0.01, 8.60±2.93 and 35.6±9.6 respectively, while cadmium and manganese were not detected in the water samples. The overall water quality index (WQI) was 6.6. The value of the WQI shows that groundwater in Ovbiogie Community is of good quality and therefore suitable for human consumption in the absence of hazardous biological contamination.
