ABSTRACT

The obstacles to achieving gender equality is not just the inability to take into account the differences in income and power relations that exist between women and men but understanding how much influence religion, culture and patriarchy wields in the actualization of equality of genders. Patriarchy in Nigeria accords men some kind of supremacy and is held in high esteem. It has become a norm that is entrenched in the psychic of men such that it is consciously and unconsciously demonstrated. Whichever form patriarchy is demonstrated, it usually puts women at disadvantage and fuels inequality. Thus, in order to build a gender balanced society, patriarchy must be dethroned. Men and women may need to question the cultural and religious practices that discriminate women. This is because gender inequality is not just 65 detrimental to a nation progress today, but will also hinder the actualization of future desired developmental quests. It also requires having a full understanding of the situation in which women find themselves. As long as society continues to swim in the euphoria of its cultural and religious practices that backs and supports patriarchy, gender equality may never be achieved. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right. It is also a keystone of a prosperous, modern economy that provides sustainable inclusive growth. Gender equality is essential for ensuring that men and women can contribute fully at home, at work and in public life, for the betterment of societies and economies at large.
