ABSTRACT
This research studies the effect of compost on plant growth using cowpea (Vigma unguiculata) seeds. The compost was prepared from fruit and vegetable wastes obtained from commercial fruit vendors by an aerobic composting method. Physiochemical characterization of the compost revealed the following results; pH (7.878 ± 0.025), electrical conductivity (455.75 ± 2.28) s/m, organic matter (108.26 ± 26.61) %. The compost was mixed with agricultural soil in two ratios (1:1, 1:3) and 100% of soil in pot experiments using cowpea seeds. Results showed the compost/soil mixture of ratio 1:1 gave better yield compared to the seeds planted with the 1:3 and 100 percent of agricultural soil.
