ABSTRACT
The Environment is inundated with so many problems ranging from global warming, climate change, pollution (which has affected plant life, aquatic life and human life), depleting resources, and improper waste management amongst others. Domestic Waste Management has to do with the collection, keeping, treatment and disposal of domestic waste in such a way as to render them harmless to human life, animal life, the ecology and the environment in general. Federal and State laws and regulations abound on the management of domestic waste in Nigeria. However, despite the plethora of laws and regulations, domestic waste still suffers from poor management as this waste is indiscriminately dumped along the roads, street corners, open lands, bushes, drainages, rivers and other water bodies. The common methods of domestic waste management in Nigeria are: landfills, composting, incineration, and recycling. In this study, the researcher examines the different methods of waste management and how efficient they are. The researcher seeks to show that these methods have adverse effects on the environment and focus should be shifted to the 5R's which encourages resource maximization. The researcher suggests, among others, that strict enforcement of laws and regulations, continuous education and provision of infrastructural facilities are the solution to the challenge of poor domestic waste management in Delta State. The researcher places reliance on articles, textbooks, personal observations, and materials from online sources for the purpose of this research. The research work shall employ an analytical and comparative method of research by evaluating, the state of domestic waste management in Delta State, the applicable laws on domestic waste management in Delta State, and compare with what occurs in Akwa Ibom State, Germany and Rwanda.
