ABSTRACT
Pollution of the environment has become a major concern to human health. The accelerated growth of industries and modernization is causing a worldwide issue as heavy metal pollutants increasingly contaminate the environment, including the soil, air and water. A total of twenty-five (25) healthy adult male albino wistar rats with weight ranging from 100g-200g were purchased. The seeds from the fresh Persea americana fruit were manually separated from the pulp and air dried for a period of three weeks until they become crispy. The crispy seed were dried in the incubator at 40-45°C for about two hours then pulverized to a fine powder. Group I (control group) was given distilled water. Group II was given lead acetate(30mg/kg) and cadmium chloride(15mg/kg) mixture. Group III was given lead acetate (30mg/kg) and cadmium chloride (15mg/kg) mixture and zinc sulphate (25mg/kg). Group IV& Group V were given 75mg/kg &100mg/kg of the extract of Persea americana dissolved in tween80 followed concomitantly by lead acetate and cadmium chloride mixture. After 28days the animals were fasted and sacrificed, tissues and blood samples were collected for analysis which include antioxidant analysis (Superoxide dismustase, catalase and Malondialdehyde), lead and cadmium analysis and lipid profile. The study showed that Persea americana seed extract significantly reduce the level of lead in the blood, it also reduced the MDA level,LDL level in the rat induced with lead and cadmium toxicity. In conclusion, it is safe to say that Persea americana seed extract can be used to reduce toxicity of cadmium and lead in the heart.
