ABSTRACT
Studies were carried out to evaluate an ultisol contaminated with different petroleum products such as Automatic Gas Oil (AGO), Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) and Domestic Petroleum Kerosene (DPK) in Okha, Edo State, Nigeria. The experiment was a completely randomized designed consisting of four (O, AGO, PMS, DPK) treatment replicated five times. The soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory (pre and post contamination) to determine the physical and chemical properties. The studies showed that there were significant (p=0.05) differences in the parameters obtained from the contaminated soils. Major properties such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were cl differently effected by each petroleum product. However, it was observed the automatic gas oil (AGO) that is diesel gave the highest degree of contamination followed by petroleum motor spirit PMS also called petrol and then the domestic petroleum kerosene DPK. This may be due to the various properties associated with them It was observed that values obtained after the contamination, showed decreases below the critical level The evaluation showed that (AGO, PMS and DPK) significantly affected the soil physical and chemical properties of the utisol. Therefore it would be inferred that petroleum products are soil degradable materials.
