ABSTRACT

The menstrual cycle is the periodic changes that occur once about every month in the female reproductive organ during the reproductive period. The renal function maintains a stable internal environment by excreting in the urine appropriate amount of many substances. This study was aimed at evaluating the variations in some renal function parameters during the luteal and menstrual phases in a population of young female adults. A population of 50 premenstrual healthy subjects within the age range of 18 to 30 were used in this study. The study was carried out across different geopolitical zones in Benin City. Subjects were asked to complete a medical and gynecological questionnaire, the clinical history of the subject was noted and different phases of the menstrual cycle were determined by the medical history. Urea concentration was estimated using urease method and creatinine concentration accessed by modified Jaffe's method. Results revealed that urea concentration and creatinine concentration showed a significant increase during menstrual phase compared to the luteal phase (p<0.05) for both urea and creatinine levels. In conclusion, a significant difference in some of the renal function parameters were due to physiological changes which include high-profile activities of the liver during the Menstrual phase of the cycle and conditions of protein diet.
