ABSTRACT
The study investigated the impact of domestic violence on women and girl children in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of 100 females from four different areas within Egor LGA was used to assess the influence of various forms of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, and financial. Additionally, the study explored strategies to mitigate domestic violence. Detailed literature review guided the investigation, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of each type of abuse and its implications on the victims.
The study employed a survey research design, utilizing questionnaires to collect data from the participants. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and t-test analysis. Instrument validity was ensured through expert validation by three academicians from the University of Benin, while reliability was confirmed with a trial test, resulting in a high reliability coefficient of 0.906. This methodological rigor ensured the reliability and accuracy of the study's findings.
The findings revealed that physical abuse significantly affects mental health and educational pursuits, emotional abuse leads to long-term psychological damage and strained relationships, sexual abuse compromises personal safety and trust, and financial abuse limits decision-making and educational opportunities. The study concluded that comprehensive interventions are urgently needed to address these pervasive issues. Recommendations include enhancing support services, promoting education on abuse dynamics, and empowering women financially through vocational training and microfinance opportunities.
