ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the effectiveness of local government administration in promoting rural development in Edo State, Nigeria. The study was specifically carried out to examine the effectiveness of local government in facilitating good roads and healthcare centers in Etsako West local government area of Edo State; ascertain the effectiveness of local government in facilitating waste management and sustainable transportation in Etsako West local government area of Edo State; investigate effectiveness of local government in the provision of rural water scheme and recreational facilities in Etsako West local government area of Edo State; and examine the problems of local government administration effort towards rural development. The study was anchored on General Systems Theory, Elite Theory, and Basic Needs Approach. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. A total of 141 respondents were selected as sample size using Yamane sampling method. The participants consists of residents of Etsako West local government area of Edo State. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that Etsako West local government area of Edo State have not played a significant role in facilitating good roads and healthcare centers in the local government. Likewise, the study revealed that Etsako West local government have not played a significant role in facilitating waste management and sustainable transportation the in the local government. Furthermore, the study revealed that Etsako West local government have not played a significant role in the provision of rural water scheme and recreational facilities in the local government. The study therefore recommends that local governments should strive to raise and maintain revenue that would enable her deliver projects and services that guarantee quality living to the grassroots. This has the potency of reducing the incidence of rural-urban drift.
