ABSTRACT

Nigeria is endowed enormously with abundant resources, which can empower the youths for positive contributions towards sustainable socio-economic development. A prosperous, disciplined, law-abiding and focused youth population remains a vital segment of the society, who has the ability to create a great future for the nation. However, the neglect of this group of human resources is no doubt the most pernicious of wastes, which can militate against the development efforts of the nation. Unemployment has become a major problem bedeviling the lives of Nigerian youth, causing increased militancy, violent crimes, kidnappings, restiveness, socially delinquent behavior, frustration, dejection and dependency on family members and friends, who also have their own problems to contend with. The high rate of unemployment among the youths in Nigeria has contributed to the high rate of poverty and insecurity in the country. Youth unemployment is devastating to both the individual and the society as a whole both psychologically and economically. This work tried to evaluate the effect of youth unemployment in Nigeria using Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State as a case study. Primary and Secondary sources were used for data collection and it was discovered in this work that there are significant relationships between youth unemployment and social vices and also that unemployment affect the economic growth of the country greatly and leads to social vices. This work recommended among other things that the problem of unemployment requires more pragmatic action from both the public and private sectors of the economy, especially the agencies and institutions charged with job creation and implementation of poverty reduction programmes.
