ABSTRACT

The study was designed to investigate the distribution and quality of daycare centers in Benin City. The objectives of the study were to show the locations and distribution of daycare centers; highlight the guidelines for establishing and operating a daycare center; to examine the quality of daycare and to highlight the impact of daycare centers on both parents and children. Questionnaire survey was used in collection of data from the study area.  Daycare centers in the study area were affirmed to be of high quality and very accessible. Generally, it was affirmed that daycare centers in Benin City have guidelines and regulations influencing their operations. The average staff to child ratio was given as 1:5 with the majority of respondents affirming that daycare centers have a had a positive impact on the development of children. The Chi-Square analysis affirmed that daycare centers in Benin City are of high quality. The study provided baseline information for future research efforts on the level of compliance of daycare centers to the guidelines and regulations governing their operations. The study recommended the usage of a regulated curriculum for teaching and learning in daycare centers. It is also recommended for daycare centers to have health workers amongst their staff in the event of health emergencies.
