ABSTRACT
Obesity is a common public health problem. It is estimated that 15.7% of adult women (aged 18 years and over) and 5.9% of adult men are obese. However, the prevalence of obesity in Nigeria is lower than the regional average of 20.7% for women and 9.2% for men (Walton et al., 2019). The aim of this study is to evaluate some inflammatory biomarkers amongst a population of young female obese adults in UNIBEN. 60 young adults (between ages 18 – 25) were selected for this study. 30 normal weight served as control while the other 30 obese individuals served as the test group. The experimental period lasted for 4 weeks during which blood samples were collected. Data was analyzed using graph pad statistical software version 8.1. The results revealed a significant increase in the BMI, Neutrophil count and C reactive proteins in obese individuals when compared with non-obese individuals and a significant decrease in Lymphocyte count in obese individuals when compared with non-obese individuals (P<0.05). In conclusion, obesity was established to significantly alter some inflammatory biomarkers. Obese individuals are recommended to control their diet and eating habit to lead a healthier life.
