ABSTRACT
Traditional and modern medicine has long acknowledged the benefits of using medicinal plants in treatment regimens. Ethnomedicine, which focuses on the conventional medical practices of ethnic communities, has developed through millennia and is anchored in oral tradition. The purpose of this study was to look into the use of herbal remedies for massage and bone setting in three local government areas of Rivers State. Data on the plant species employed, their availability, potency, and indigenous knowledge of preparation and administration were gathered through an ethnomedicinal survey. Information on 39 plants from 21 families was provided by thirty competent responders. There was documentation of the botanical names, Local names, plant parts used, mode of preparation and administration and usage. The results showed that, despite the accessibility of modern treatment, the rural populace continues to favor and actively seek out traditional plant-based therapies. These herbal medications continue to be a popular option for basic healthcare due to their availability, effectiveness, body compatibility, and price. These results support prior World Health Organization research and highlight the value of conventional medicine in meeting healthcare demands. The study also emphasized how indigenous populations have considerable knowledge of the production and administration of traditional herbal medicines, which are related with massage and bone setting. The study suggests using conservation measures to secure the preservation of medicinal plants and the information related to them. Sustainable healthcare can be implemented while maintaining the environment for future generations by protecting these priceless resources and local knowledge. In Nigeria, it is important to promote the fusion of conventional medical practices with modern ones, including the traditional setting of bones and massage processes. The findings contribute to our understanding of traditional medicine and its role in providing accessible and affordable healthcare options.
