ABSTRACT
According to Augusto Boal, "drama is a mirror of the society". This means that theatre and drama artistically reflects the society and the various forms of cultures, traditions, norms, and beliefs that govern the society. Since culture is as old as the existence of man himself, and the cultural practices of a given community defines their ethnicity — ethnicity cannot be erased from the tenets of theatre and drama. However, as the act of cultural migration and multi-cultural encounter began to unfold, some forms of conflict in beliefs and norms were birthed. This led to the division in cultural opinion and perspective by many, resulting to several forms of inter-ethnic conflicts. Since drama communicates the culture and traditions of a given society through performance, and it's manipulation of several theatrical elements such as: costume, lights, music, dance etc. This research examines ethnicity and ethnic conflict, underlining their artistic link to drama. It outlines the representation of these cultural elements and conflicts, through the combination of several dramatic mediums to create and reflect the society. To project this link, this research appraises Toyin Abiodun's Trials Of Afonja, and Ahmed Yerima's Abobaku, as creative documents of ethnicity and ethnic conflict.
