ABSTRACT

This study examined ethical leadership and employee commitment in the University of Benin, Benin City. Specifically, it assessed the relationship between people orientation, ethical guidance, role clarification, power sharing and employee commitment in the University of Benin, Benin City. The survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of the study covered all employees of the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 400 copies of questionnaire were distributed, retrieved and found usable for the study. Stratified random sampling procedure was used in administering the copies of questionnaire to selected respondents in the University of Benin. The data collected through questionnaire administration were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the research models using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) technique through the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 24. The study found that there is a positive and significant relationship between people orientation, ethical guidance, role clarification, power sharing and employee commitment in the University of Benin, Benin City. The study recommends that university administrators enhance their people orientation by investing in training programs that focus on developing leaders’ interpersonal skills, strengthen their ethical guidance mechanisms by developing and communicating clear ethical standards and policies, improve role clarification by providing detailed job descriptions and ensure that employees have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, and encourage a participative approach to decision-making where employees are involved in discussions and decisions that affect their work and the organisation.
