ABSTRACT
Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) sometimes known as garbage in the US and rubbish in the UK, are a kind of waste made up of objects that are routinely thrown by the general public. This has the potential to be channeled into a very useful form that will generate energy and wealth. The main Objective of this exercise is to estimate the energy value of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the Students hostels in the University of Benin, Ugbowo. This would be helpful for converting of waste to useful energy which can power home appliances thereby reducing the demand for public supply which in short-supply. This analysis carried out in this study estimated the chemical properties and the physical properties such as, moisture content, volatile matter and ash content of the collected wastes samples from the three (3) hostels in the Ugbowo campus of the University of Benin. Also, the calorific value and gas generated in the biogas plant were estimated. This study not only aims at protecting the environment and reducing expenses for waste disposal, but also benefits the school in generating energy and gas for domestic use.
