 ABSTRACT

Lackadaisical attitude of Nigerians on maintenance culture has negatively affected infrastructural development which is critical and essential to a Nation’s development. Achieving vision 2020 goals would be attainable if existing structures and facilities are constantly maintained.The population for this study was 265 people, comprising 220 Teachers and 45 School Administrators as the target population, in Edo state public Secondary Schools  Poor maintenance culture has drawn the nation a thousand steps backward and one of the stride actions that could salvage the country from the total mess of infrastructural decay is maintenance. This paper aimed at examininghe instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire tagged “establishing the factors militating against school plant maintenance practices (EFMAMPQ). It was developed by the researcher. The instrument was divided into two Sections; A, B and C. Section A sought information on personal data of the respondent. While section B was contains ten items, to elicit information on effective of government and school administration on maintenance. While section C contains 10 items to sought information on factors militating against school plant maintenance practices.  lack of maintenance culture through review of archival materials and participative observations. Cronbach Alpha method was used and the reliability co-efficient of 0.76 was obtained. Poor leadership, corruption, attitudinal problem and lack of maintenance policy were identified as major causes of the menace. In conclusion, the paper adequate provision and maintenance of school plant should be the major priority of government in development of schools. This will assist in achieving effective teaching and learning in schools.

Efforts should be made by the principal and other school authorities to preserve the available plants in the school and prevent wrong use of the plants,.

However, faults detected that will affect the functionality of schools plants should be immediately rectified and dealt with on time in order to avoid total breakdown of school plant.
