ABSTRACT

Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf commonly known as lemongrass has a history of application in aromatherapy and it is commonly utilized in addressing pyrexia, diarrheal and gastrointestinal issues. Lemongrass essential oil(LEO) derived from this plant, has also been utilized by healthcare professionals to manage digestive ailments and hypertension. In this study, Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf was obtained from Ugbowo, located at coordinates 6.4044913 and 5.6094561 in Benin City, Edo State. The essential oil was extracted using the hydrodistillation method. The oil's chemical composition was analyzed through GC-MS, revealing the presence of 40 phytoconstituents, with a notably high concentration of oxygenated monoterpenes at 73.31%. The major phytoconstituents identified include; Citral (41.09%), β-myrcene (19.4%), Geraniol (4.25%), and Geranyl acetate (2.59%). Additionally, oxygenated sesquiterpenes were also detected.
