ABSTRACT

This study examined the error found in the written text of undergraduate students. The research was carried out to identify and determine the error types and the causes of these errors that students make during writing. The objectives are; to identify the types of errors in undergraduate written text, trace the causes of theses errors and to provide suggestions on how to correct these errors. After a detailed study, fouettés different errors were identified and described such as preposition, articles, part of speech, etc. This study reveals that the interference of students’ mother tongue and low accumulation of knowledge from the target language ‘English’. Is a major cause of these errors. This study may contribute to the students improving their level of English and thus using the language more effectively and thus improve their writing skills. After a careful analysis, the following recommendations were given which may help teachers and students to overcome their difficulties in writing English essay. This study recommends English to adopt, modify, or even develop procedures and techniques that can minimize the learner’s errors and elevate the student’s level. They should teach students how to think and to use a foreign language (English) as its native user do, students need to accumulate knowledge about word usage and also improve their communication skills in English. This could be an essential tool for students to improve their writing skills.
