ABSTRACT

Environmental knowledge is an important component of learning and information for adolescents in secondary schools. This study assessed environmental knowledge of University Demonstration Secondary School students. Three research questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the study.

The population of the study comprised of three hundred and seventeen (317) students in Senior Secondary School I – III, from which a sample of one hundred and twenty-six (126) respondents were selected for the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A self-designed questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentage, mean and t-test statistics.

Results showed that respondents had average environmental knowledge. Also, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between environmental knowledge and age. However, there was no significant relationship between environmental knowledge and gender. The study therefore concluded students exhibited average knowledge in relation environmental concepts. While they had adequate knowledge on some topics, they exhibited average knowledge on some and a low knowledge on others. The study recommended that quiz and competitions in environmental topics should be organized regularly as this will motivate students to be inquisitive and search for information relating to environmental issues. Also, aside regular instructions provided in schools to students in relation to environmental issues, the school authority should consider organizing students to form groups/society solely for the purpose of educating them on environmental issues and concerns.
