ABSTRACT

Environmental impact assessment was carried out at Ikhueniro and its environs, Edo State, to know the level of geochemical contamination. Eighteen (18) composite soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 – 60 cm with the aid of soil auger in order to determine its geochemical parameters as well as to carry out speciation studies. Five (5) groundwater samples were collected within and away from the dumpsite. One (1) river water sample from Okhuahe River and one (1) raw leachate from Ikhueniro dumpsite was also collected during the field exercise. Exchangeable ions such as (Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+), heavy metals such as (Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Cd2+) sulfides, oxides and chlorides, all exceeded the permissible limit set by WHO and SON. It is generalized that the groundwater be properly monitored at intervals as the risk of heavy pollution which can lead to adverse health effect, is imminent.
