ABSTRACT
Environmental education plays a crucial role in fostering sustainable waste management practices by enhancing individuals' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. This study examines the impact of environmental education on students' waste management awareness, perceptions, and practices at the University of Benin. Four research questions and one hypothesis was rasied to guide the study. Using a survey approach, data were collected from 197 students through a likerk sscale research instrument; across four departments within four faculties in the University of Benin. The findings indicate that students exhibit a high level of knowledge regarding waste management concepts, including the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and the environmental benefits of proper waste disposal. Attitudinal responses suggest that students view waste management as both a personal and collective responsibility essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The study concludes that while environmental education effectively improves waste management awareness, additional efforts are needed to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for policymakers, educational institutions, and environmental organizations to strengthen practical waste management initiatives and infrastructure. Further research is suggested to explore long-term behavioral changes and the role of digital platforms in environmental education.
