ABSTRACT

This study examined the environmental and socio-economic effects of stormwater management in Benin city. Purposive sampling was used to select 10 communities in Benin city within which this study was carried out. The objectives of the study were to identify the existing storm water management drainage schemes and it`s coordination pattern(s),To ascertain the causes for the uncoordinated storm water management in Benin City, To evaluate the environmental effects of uncoordinated storm water management In Benin city, To determine the social-economic effects of uncoordinated storm water management In Benin city and Suggest possible solutions to the problems of uncoordinated storm water management in Benin city. The methods of observation and questionnaire administration were employed to collect data in the study area. From the analysis of data, it was discovered that uncoordinated stormwater management has adverse effect on environmental and Socio-economic activities such as condition of road, beauty of the environment, cost of transportation, mobility, cost of rent and so on in Benin city. The study also revealed the existing stormwater management schemes and the problems faced in the coordination of those schemes. The study recommend that government should carry out rapid drainage redesigning and expansion in Benin City to meet the prevailing challenges flooding. In addition, proper land use control should be enforced to prevent people from building on flood prone areas.
