ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS REQUIRED BY VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS FOR SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at determining the entrepreneurship skills required by vocational and technical education student for sustainable employment in Edo state. In order to achieve the purpose of the study five research question will raise an examined. Questionnaire was used to collect data from 138 final year industrial technical education students of the department of vocational and technical education. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the investigation. Data obtained where analyzed using descriptive statistics comprising of frequency count simple percentage mean analysis and standard deviation. A criterion means call of 2.50 was used as a benchmark for purpose of decision making. Findings from the study revealed, among others, that vocational and technical education students have positive perception of entrepreneurship skills and education, that the extent of influence of entrepreneurship education of vocational and technical education student was low, that business skills that can be acquired through entrepreneurship education includes managerial, organizational, accounting, marketing and leadership skills. Findings also revealed that vocational skills have I impact on students economic status and their challenges facing vocational and technical education students in entrepreneurship education include non-availability of practical workshop for entrepreneurship program, insufficient equipment for entrepreneurship education and lack of motivation to participate in entrepreneurship classes on the part of VTE students. Based on the conclusion from the study, recommendation measures should be taken to encourage and motivate vte students undergoing entrepreneurship programs, students should be made to see the need to acquire necessary business skills and that the school management should provide the necessary facilities that would promote an help achieve their objective of entrepreneurship programs
