ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION AND ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION AMONGST STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

The study investigated entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention amongst the University of Benin Students, Benin City. The specific objectives were to examine whether the entrepreneurship curriculum, method of teaching entrepreneurship courses and the entrepreneurship lecturers / venture advisors exert influence on the entrepreneurial intentions of the Department of Entrepreneurship students.

The study adopted a survey research design. The population for this study is the University of Benin students. Two hundred (200) students from the Department of Entrepreneurship constituted the sample size for this study. Data was generated through the aid of a well-designed and structured questionnaire administration. Questionnaires retrieved were analyzed using the simple percentage analysis, frequencies, bar charts and Z–test. The study found that the entrepreneurship curriculum and the methods of teaching entrepreneurship courses had a positive significant relationship with entrepreneurial intentions while the entrepreneurship lecturers/ venture advisors had a negative relationship with entrepreneurial intention amongst the University of Benin Students.

The study recommended that workshops, practical sessions, case studies, theory based lectures, guest lectures by entrepreneurs, business plan development, real life scenarios etc. should be integrated into the entrepreneurship curriculum, the method of teaching entrepreneurship courses should be done in a way that it equip the students with the necessary skills and proficiencies for succeeding entrepreneurially, the entrepreneurship lecturers and venture advisors should offer valuable entrepreneurial insights and practical advice based on the real world experience.
