ABSTRACT

This research study explores the role of theatre productions in enhancing societal development, with a specific focus on selected productions from the University of Benin's theatrical repertoire. The study aims to analyze how these theatrical performances contribute to social and cultural development within the context of Benin City, Nigeria. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research combines qualitative analysis of the selected theatre productions, including thematic content and artistic elements, with quantitative surveys and interviews involving both audience members and participants in the productions. By examining the themes, messages, and societal impacts of these theatrical works, we seek to elucidate the ways in which theatre can foster positive change and influence social consciousness in a Nigerian urban setting. Preliminary findings indicate that theatre productions from the University of Benin have played a significant role in addressing critical social issues, promoting cultural heritage, and fostering community engagement. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the potential of theatre as a catalyst for societal development in the Nigerian context and underscores its value as a tool for cultural preservation and social progress.
