Abstract This study examined enhancing public sector transparency and accountability in Nigeria: a case study of independent corrupt practices and other related of ences. The study adopted survey design using questionnaire to source data from targeted respondents. The data was analyse using percentage and chi-square statistics. The result revealed that there is significant relationship between public sector accountability and local development process in Edo State. The result also revealed that there is significant relationship between public sector accountability and national developmental project plan in Edo State. The result showed that there is significant relationship between challenges of public sector accountability and national development in Edo State. The study recommended that the Edo state government should take an ef icient and ef ective planning control measures and prudent management of their resources and also to increase the salaries of all staf and members of the state government so as to motivate their ef orts towards the discharge of the duties assigned to them in other to achieve the stated objective(s) of the state government that geared toward national development. The state government authority should endeavor to look into its administrative activities regularly and then prosecute any of icer(s) found embezzling public funds and also make the head of the account of ice answerable for any such misappropriation. Nigeria should prioritize the following actions to improve budget transparency through publishing the pre-budget statement, In-Year Reports, Mid-Year Review, and Audit Report online in a timely manner. The state government authority should set up a disciplinary committee to punish defaulters especially the chairman and the head of account department after which they should be handed over to “economic and financial crime commission” EFCC for proper examination and prosecution as this will put fear into the minds of the in- coming chairman or the head of account department of the local government.
