ABSTRACT

This study discusses “English Loanwords in Yorùbá language”. The aim of this study is to investigate how English Loanwords are being integrated into the Yorùbá language. The study relied on primary and secondary data collection. The primary data include oral information collected from News media such as TV station namely BCOS (Broad Casting cooperation of Oyo State) in which 45% Loanwords were collected. The secondary data was drawn out from published material such as a Yorùbá Literature book titled   “Ègún Orí ìkúnlé “ in which 9% Loanwords were collected. The Yorùbá Bible was also used in which 4% Loanwords were collected. The theoretical framework adopted for this study is morphopohonemic data analysis, which was used to identify how English Loanwords are being integrated into the Yorùbá language. The study found out that Yorùbá have a heavy borrowing, they tends to borrow from other languages. This is done not because they don’t have the equivalent sometimes but they borrowed in other to be identified as part of the speakers.
