ABSTRACT
The study examined English language teachers assessment practices in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study.
The Descriptive survey research design was employed to guide the study. The study samples 49 teachers selected from a total of 11 public Secondary schools located in the Oredo Local Government Area. The study employed the Simple random sampling technique to choose 49 teachers. The computed sample size of 49 was based on a sample population of 288 teachers in 11 Public Secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The research instrument was a questionnaire designed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor, necessary corrections was made on the questionnaire before it was administered to teachers that were selected for the study. Data was collected using a questionnaire. In administering the questionnaire, the face-to-face method was adopted to minimize the chances of errors in the process of responding to it. Data was analyzed item by item mean and standard deviation (SD) were calculated for each of the items to find out the variations.
The findings revealed that English Language teachers have high assessment practices. Also, the findings of the study found that both male and female teachers classrooms assessment practices are high. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others: That there should be regular and periodic in-service training programs for English Language teachers on the assessment techniques in teaching the subject. This would go a long way in enhancing their knowledge on the various assessment techniques used in teaching thereby enhancing their level of job productivity, the educational planners should as a matter of priority ensure that classroom assessment practices is an important component in the English Language curriculum in secondary schools in Nigeria. This would ensure that teachers are awakened to the consciousness in adopting the various techniques in teaching the subject amongst others.
