Every time there is a transaction of buying and selling, there is a 99% tendency of contribution to the heaps of waste which has grown significantly in Nigeria over the past decades.
This research is concerned with the enforcement of the laws of solid waste disposal in Nigeria which includes the legal tools put in place for the regulation of environment and how this legal tools or laws are to be exercised by the citizens in order to secure a safe and healthy environment for the wellbeing of the people and the environment. The research also asses the available methods used to dispose solid waste in Nigeria and their sustainability. It also discourages the utilization of ineffective and unsustainable models of solid waste management. The study will also highlight the advantages and disadvantages of recycling as a more sustainable and effective method of solid waste management in the light of the present day realities of solid waste in Nigeria.
The study found that Nigeria currently has a poor solid waste management system, even with all the available legislation regulating waste management and agencies to ensure proper sanitation. The study also finds that the common and regularly used methods of waste management in Nigeria such as landfill which is also the only used system in some parts of the country such as Lagos state are largely unsustainable. There are several methods of waste disposal used to ameliorate and mitigate the issue of population effect on waste management and that recycling is a viable method of waste reduction and management which main benefit include sale of compost from recycled waste and employment sourced from the three waste management companies, the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).
