The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between employees’ empowerment and organizational commitment in the University of Benin. The study adopts a survey research instrument through the administration of questionnaires to one hundred and fifty (150) respondents who were staffs of University of Benin. A total of one hundred and forty three (143) questionnaires was retrieved and subsequently analyzed. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (analysis of variance (ANOVA)).
The empirical results showed that; there is a significant relationship between employees’ empowerment and organizational commitment; and the descriptive statistics showed that most of the respondents agreed to the statements intended to ascertain how empowered they are in their institution. Similarly they relatively agreed to questions intended to ascertain how committed they are to the institution.
The study therefore recommends that Management of Nigerian Universities should make employees’ empowerment a top priority. Also, Nigerian Universities should consider inputs from employees’ when making decision because often a time the employees are the most involved in the organizational processes and might be aware of things that is far reaching to the management. Finally, employees’ cohesiveness should be enhanced because employees’ fair better when working together towards the achievement of set objectives.
