ABSTRACT

Ever increasing global energy demand associated with depletion of conventional hydrocarbon resources drives exploration and production (E&P) industry to invent advanced new technologies in frontier areas of drilling, production and reservoir engineering to enhance hydrocarbon production from unconventional resources or depleted reservoirs. Demand to produce from a low pressure marginal reservoir and the discoveries of naturally fractured reservoirs lead to the development of new drilling techniques. The essentiality of the technical development can be understood in view of increasing production from naturally fractured, depleted or tight formations. This paper centers on how this newer technologies supersedes in various aspect that should be considered against the older technologies in drilling in E&P. Therefore by combining extended reach drilling capability with advanced stimulation technology to enable oil companies to optimize how and where stimulation fluid interacts with rock, allowing sustained production rates along the length of the wellbore unfortunately, drilled wells with overbalance are subject to formation damage with varying degree of severity, depending upon the drilling conditions. Since the birth of petroleum business, in the mid-19th century, cable tool and rotary drilling have been the only two techniques applied in the drilling phase till date. Although the rotary drilling technique has proved very successful, applying laser technology in this drilling; which is a newer technology that is already at hand, has the potential of displacing both techniques from operation. A comparative review on both drilling technologies in earlier and modern times and look at its effect on HSE (Health safety and environment) and also its cost effectiveness coupled with drilling time.
