ELECTRONIC BANKING AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANK IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of electronic banking on the financial performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria for the period 2008 – 2021. It adopted three independent variables (ATMs service, point of sale (POS) service and mobile banking (MB)) and the dependent variable financial performance wasproxied by return on assets (ROA) of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The findings of the study are thatATM transactions has a positive and insignificant relationship with performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria while MB transactions has a positive and significant relationship with performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. POS transactions have a positive and significant relationship with performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria and the control variable bank size has a positive and significant relationship with performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The study recommendedthat increased POS service deployment should be encouraged in order to improve banking services and operations. Overall, this will significantly enhance the financial performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria and a better, more effective, and efficient internet services via bank internet bank connectivity and a diverse range of financial services that will increase customers' financial appetite are critical to stimulating deposit money banks’ financial performance in Nigeria.
