ABSTRACT

Utilizing VLF-EM survey method in sedimentary basins has not attracted substantial usage in detecting leachate plume migration, specifically in southern Nigeria. This study focused on implementation of Very Low Frequency Electromagnetics (VLF-EM) for the detection of leachate plume migration in a waste disposal site at Otofure in Ovia north-east local government area of Edo state. VLF was used to examine the depth at which leachate plume generated from the municipal dump site had migrated. The analysis of the 2-Dimensional images of the VLF data shows displayed evidence of pollutants leached into the soil geological strata. There was a clear representation that the leachate plume in the study area had migrated to a depth of about 10-40m. Geophysical data was gotten from three (3) profile lines with lengths of 250m to 150m and 10m spacing on each data point using the Scintrex ENVI VLF device. The results suggested that conductive materials detected in the subsurface have been able to migrate to a depth of 40m and counting below the surface. This study has validated the effectiveness of VLF technique usage in sedimentary basins for the detecting depth to leachate plume migration.
