ABSTRACT

 

This study aimed to design a comprehensive electrical service plan for a four-storey school building, with a focus on optimizing lighting design, balancing distribution board loads, and sizing the power backup system. The primary objectives included taking precise measurements, developing a detailed plan, performing the electrical service design, and conducting a thorough load audit to ensure the system's efficiency and reliability.

The research methodology involved several key steps: measuring the dimensions of classrooms and office spaces, reviewing relevant literature on electrical service design, and utilizing AutoCAD software for architectural sketching and electrical design. Additionally, a clamp meter was used for load auditing, and the lumen method was employed for lighting design. The study also included calculations for load demand, cable sizing, and generator sizing, along with the design of sockets and electrical fittings using AutoCAD software.

The results demonstrated a meticulously planned lighting design, with appropriate illuminance levels and luminous flux values tailored for different areas of the building. Protective devices, such as circuit breakers, were selected based on factors including current rating, cable size, and voltage drop considerations. For instance, Distribution Boards A and B, with current ratings of 58A and 57.5A respectively, were fitted with 100A circuit breakers, while Distribution Board C, rated at 42.2A, used a 63A circuit breaker. Distribution Board D, with a current rating of 65.5A, was also protected by a 100A circuit breaker. The study validated the use of a 400A main circuit breaker for total load protection of 322.2A across all distribution boards. The study also recommended the incorporation of practical workshops and industry partnerships to enhance hands-on experience and provide practical training opportunities.
