ABSTRACT

This experiment was carried out in the Experimental Field sited behind Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City to ascertain the properties of the soil under egusi-melon (Colocynthis citrullus) and mucuna bean (Mucuna pruriens) in sole cropping and intercropping.

The experimental design used was CRD (Complete Randomized Design), with three levels of same treatment that was replicated three times.

Composite soil samples were collected before the experiment; and after the experiment soil samples were also taken from each plot. Soil parameters determined include soil pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, total organic carbon, exchangeable bases like potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, as well as presence of hydrogen and aluminium ions, sand, silt and clay.

These soil parameters obtained were subject to analysis of variance, using Genstat 8th edition; while DNMRT was used in separating the mean at 5% level of significance.

The result obtained shows no or little significance on sole egusi-melon, mucuna bean and the intercrop but a major significance on soil pH.
