EFFICACY STUDY ON LISTERINE ANTISEPTIC MOUTHWASH USED IN THE DENTAL CLINIC

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In developing countries like Nigeria, the prevalence and incidence of orodental infections and demographics of the affected population are not well documented. Plaque is viewed as a complex matrix of microbial community and debris which form on the tooth surfaces. Plaque formation has been established to play a key role in the development and progression of oral diseases. Listerine mouthwash is a popular oral hygiene product with antimicrobial and antiplaque forming activity. This study aims to evaluate the trends and demographics among the study participants as well as the efficacy of Listerine antiseptic mouthwash. Methodology: This study evaluated one hundred and five patients who visited the Dental Clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for scaling and polishing during the period of the research study. Patient data and plaque specimen were obtained at the study center. Microbiological analysis as well as antimicrobial susceptibility, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) determination were carried out on the specimen at the Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin, Benin city, using standard techniques. Results: Streptococcus and Staphylococcus spp accounted for the most prevalent and susceptible bacterial isolates respectively in this study. Majority of the bacterial isolates had their MIC (139 out of 232) and MBC (151 out of 232) at concentrations greater than or equal to 90%. Conclusion: The study demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of Listerine mouthwash against anerobic, aerobic, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial isolates present in the dental plaque of patients at the study center. xiii Keywords; Oral infections, plaque, demographics, prevalence, incidence, antimicrobial activity, antimicrobial susceptibility, minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration.
