ABSTRACT

This research work examines the effect of training and development on employees’ performance using Central Bank of Nigeria, Benin City, Edo State as a case study. The objectives of this study are to ascertain: if on the job training programmes are to a large extent significant to the manpower needs of employees in Central Bank of Nigeria, Benin City; if off the job training programmes are to a large extent significant to employees performance in Central Bank of Nigeria, Benin City and suggest the possible ways of enhancing training and development in Central Bank of Nigeria, Benin City. Data for this study was obtained with the use of questionnaire and presented with simple percentage. The hypotheses were tested with chi-square statistics. From the result of findings, it was discovered that: on the job training programmes to a large extent are significant to employees performance and off the job training programmes to a large extent are significant to employees performance. It is therefore recommended that: organizations should train employees so as to develop their skills as training and development are vital in achieving organizational objectives; management should endeavour to identify the areas where employees require training so as to give the relevant training; organizations should embark on training in order to achieve organizational objectives; organizations should embark on training in order to improve operational flexibility through the application of range of skills and knowledge acquired during training and manpower development and the right type of training which is relevant to manpower needs of employees should be adopted by organizations.
