ABSTRACT
The effect of spent engine oil on the growth of Telfairia occidentalis was examined. The plant was grown in soil contaminated with 10 ml, 20ml, 40ml, and 60ml of spent engine oil respectively and observed for five (5) weeks following planting. The effects of oil pollution on different growth parameters such as leaf number, vine length, fresh and dry weights and leaf area were investigated. Result showed that the mean vine length, leaf number, and leaf area of Telfairia occidentalis significantly decreased (p< 0.05) with increasing level of contamination with spent engine oil. The best growth was recorded in the plants grown in uncontaminated soil (control) while increasing concentration of spent engine oil adversely affected the crop. It is suggested that indiscriminate dumping of spent engine oil should be prevented.
