EFFECTS OF RURAL URBAN MIGRATION ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

This research study examined the effect of rural urban migration on rural development using three rural areas of Egor local government area which includes; Uwelu, Okhoro and Use. In order to actualize the objectives of the study, various literature and theoretical issues were discussed. The instrument used for the purpose of this research was the primary research instrument (questionnaire).And also the secondary source of data collection(journals,Internet). The mass of information generated from the questionnaires was summarized in form of table and analyzed using sample percentage. The researcher administered one hundred (100) questionnaires to respondents, out of which ninety-five (95) were retrieved for the purpose of presenting and analyzing responses to issues raised in the questionnaires. The hypotheses were tested using the regression analysis statistical tool.The findings from the analysis revealed among other things that; rural urban migration affects the education in the rural areas of Egor Local Government Area and also, rural urban migration affects the infrastructural development in the rural areas of Egor Local Government Area. That rural urban migration affects the standard of living in the rural areas of Egor Local Government Area; and rural urban migration affects the rate of unemployment in the rural areas of Egor Local Government Area.The study recommends amongst others that; rural residents must have self-determination in matters affecting their means of subsistence; governments at all levels should embrace inclusive grassroots governance, in which rural residents actively participate in evaluating their socioeconomic issues and developing solutions to them; and policymakers should develop long-term strategies to reduce rural-urban migration while also improving the environment and living conditions of rural residents.
