ABSTRACT
This study examined the effects of rural-urban migration on agricultural production in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Benin City. The objectives of the study were: to ascertain the factors influencing farmers out migration in Ovia North-East Local Government Area; to determine the type of migration of farmers in Ovia North-East Local Government Area; to examine the pattern of migration in Ovia North-East Local Government Area; and to examine the problems associated with rural-urban migration in Ovia North-East Local Government Area. Questionnaires were administered to a total of 150 respondents across the study area. All the questionnaires were all returned valid for analysis and the data collected were fed into the SPSS version 24. The data were analyzed using the frequency table, pie charts and bar graphs. It was discovered that rural – urban migration is the most prominent type of migration and the search for an improved standard of living is a major factor influencing out migration in the study area. It was also discovered that the most common method of access to farming land is via communal ownership and the problem of labour constraints avail much in Ovia North East Local Government Area and residents in this area make of family members in a bid to augment labour supply on their farms. It was hence recommended that government of the region should aid the rural areas by providing adequate basic infrastructures as this would limit the flow of migration to urban centers. The employment of mechanized equipments by farmers is also advised to aid in the shortage of labour supply on farmlands and to improve the storage of farm yields.
