ABSTRACT

Diarrhea is a common problem worldwide with significant health and economic cost. It is often characterized by heightened gastrointestinal activity and fluid secretion, along with reduced absorption of water and electrolytes. While modern medicine has been successful in treating diarrhea, traditional medicine has also been used for centuries to treat this condition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a polyherbal extract on haematological parameter using haematological parameters which include; white blood cells and their differentials lymphocyte, monocyte and granulocyte, red blood cells and its component haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean concentration volume, mean corpuscle haemoglobin and mean corpuscle haemoglobin concentration, platelets and its factors, platelet crits, platelet density width and mean platelet volume and cluster of differential count (CD4 and CD8) in swiss mice. Graded dosage (25,50,100mg/kg) of the polyherbal extract containing Cymbopogon citratus, Zingiber officinale, Garcinia kola and Musa paradisiaca, were orally administered to explore the haematological effects of the plant extract. The result showed that the polyherbal extract increased the CD4 counts and decreased the CD8 counts in the mice with diarrhea. The results of this study suggest that the polyherbal extract may be a promising treatment for diarrheal. Further research is needed to investigate the mechnnism of action and to determine the optimal dosage and long – term safety of the extract in humans.
