EFFECTS OF NON-USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of non-use of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in the public senior secondary schools in Egor L.G.A of Edo State. This is a descriptive survey. The population for this study were the twelve (12) public senior secondary schools in Egor L.G.A of Edo State  consisting of five thousand ,five hundred and seventy-four (5,574) . Four (4) public senior secondary were selected as sample using simple random sampling technique and from each school, twenty (20) students were used as respondents, amounting to a total of eighty (80) respondents from the selected public senior secondary schools, using the convenient sampling technique so that every interested respondent is given equal opportunity of being chosen. The instrument used was questionnaire called Effects of Non-use of Instructional Material in Academic Performance of Student Questionnaire (ENIMAPSQ). Data were analysed using frequency counts and simple percentages.

 It was found that the non-use of instructional materials had effects on the academic performance of students in the public senior secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state, the non-use of instructional materials does not facilitate and enhance teaching and learning in the public senior secondary schools in Egor local government, the non-use of instructional material had great effects on theachievement of more objectives by the teachers in the public senior secondary schools inEgor local government area of Edo state. It can be deduced that students attitude/interest had effect on the non-use of instructional materials in the public senior secondary schools in Egor local government local government area of Edo state and lastly, the level of students’ academic performance was greatly affected by the non-use of instructional materials in the public senior secondary schools Egor local government area of Edo state.

From the findings of the study, it was concluded that instructional material had positive impact on academic performance of students of Egor local government area of Edo state. Based on this it was recommended that the government should strive and set aside a reasonable amount of education budget which will be directed to improve and construct libraries and provide instructional materials in school. School management should make available instructional materials for teachers to use during teaching and learning process, teachers should be educated on the importance of utilizing instructional material during teaching and learning process and acquire new skills and government must strive to ensure all public schools are equipped with relevant educational facilities.
