ABSTRACT
The ovary is a vital organ in the female reproductive system. It’s primary functions are the release of eggs and secretion of female sex hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. The prevalence of infertility due to problems with the ovaries can vary widely based on factors such as age, underlying medical conditions or even ingested substances. Myristica fragrans (Nutmeg) is a popular spice used in preparing food in our homes. Bur could the regular ingestion of nutmeg affect the ovary? This study was carried out on 30 female Wistar rats. These rats were grouped into 5 groups; A, B, C, D and E. Group A was the control group and was fed with feed mash and water only. Animals in group B were administered 1.5mg/kg of nutmeg with the regular feed mash and water. Animals in group C were administered 2.5mk/kg of nutmeg alongside the regular feed and water. Animals in group D were administered 3.5mg/kg of nutmeg alongside feed mash and water. Animals in group E were administered 4.5mg/kg of nutmeg with the regular feed mash and water. The administration of the extract of nutmeg was for a period of 28 days after which they were sacrificed and taken for histological examination. The control group (A) showed the normal architecture of an ovary tissue. The histological results in group B, C and D showed that there was decreased folliculogenesis and continuous reduction of viable follicles as the dosages of the nutmeg extract increased. Vasodilation and congestion of the stroma was also observed. But in group E, the nutmeg extract did not have so much effect ad group B, C and D as there was increased folliculogenesis and increased number of viable follicles but these follicles were not as many as those in the control group. In conclusion, Myristica fragrans has an effect in the histological orientation of the ovary.
