ABSTRACT

The study investigates the effects of methanolic extracts of Jatropha curcas leaves on the hematological parameters of Wistar albino rats. Jatropha curcas, known for its diverse medicinal properties, was tested for its impact on red blood cell indices, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit levels, and platelet count.

Twenty-four Wistar albino rats, averaging 150 to 170g, were acclimatized for two weeks under standard laboratory conditions. Post-acclimatization, the rats were divided into four groups of six. The control group received standard feed and water, while the experimental groups received the same diet plus varying doses of the methanolic extract at 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg body weight for 14 days.

On the 14th day, blood samples were collected from each rat under anesthesia for hematological analysis. The study found dose-dependent variations in RBC count, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and platelet count. These findings suggest potential erythropoietic and toxicological effects of Jatropha curcas at different dosages, highlighting its complex impact on hematological health.

The results provide a foundation for further research into the therapeutic and adverse effects of Jatropha curcas on blood parameters.
