ABSTRACT
The effect of extract of Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) on total protein concentration of liver, serum and kidney of streptozotocin induced type 2 diabetic rats was investigated. Diabetes was induced in the rats by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, dosage of 45mg/kg body weight. The plant extract was administered orally at a dosage of 400mg/kg body weight to the rats for 21 days. Fasting blood glucose concentration and weight of rats were measured on a weekly basis. After 21 days, the rats were sacrificed and samples of the blood serum, liver and kidney were taken. Total protein concentration was measured in these samples. The results show a slight increase in total protein concentration of rats in the diabetic treated group as compared to the control group. This increase was not judged to be significant.
