EFFECTS OF HYDROCORTISONE AND MONTELUKAST ON BLOOD GLUCOSE AND WEIGHT OF ASTHMA-INDUCED WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness and respiratory symptoms like breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and coughing. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Monteleukast and Hydrocortisone on blood glucose and weight of asthma induced wistar rats, Methodology: 25 Albino wistar rats weighing between 200-250g were divided into two main groups; the Control group and the Test group. The Control group is further divided into; the Control group (Group 1) and the Negative control (Group 2), Test group is divided into three groups; Group 3: Asthma induced and treated with Monteleukast, Group 4: Asthma induced and treated with Hydrocortisone, Group 5: Asthma induced and treated with Monteleukast and Hydrocortisone. Group 1 (control group) was sensitized and challenged with intraperitoneal injection and aerosol saline while Group (2,3,4,5) was sensitized with Ovalabumine (OVA)(100ug/kg i.p) and challenged with OVA(0.5%w/v dissolved in 100mg/ml Aluminum hydroxide) three days a week for 28days with Medel family Nebulizer. After confirmation of asthma in all test groups, treatment began in 2mg/kg Monteleukast (oral) in group 3 and 3mg/kg Hydrocortisone in group 4, monteleukast 2mg/kg and hydrocortisone 3mg/kg in group 5 daily for the period of treatment. On the 28th day of drug administration, All rats were weighed using a Measuring scale and rats from each group were used. The tail of the rats were pricked with a lancet and drops of blood was placed on the glucometer test strips, blood glucose concentration(Random sugar) was taken using Accu-check glucometer. At the end of the study, There was no statistically significant difference in Random blood glucose concentration and weight among Monteleukast, Hydrocortisone, Montelukast and Hydrocortisone treatment on asthma induced wistar rats. Administration of Monteleukast and Hydrocortisone controls blood glucose levels within normal range.
