ABSTRACT
Fructose can lead to the accumulation of toxic metabolites in some organs. Relative organ weight and anthropometric data are important in accessing toxicity of certain substances that is the toxicity of substances can be revealed by the reduction in the body and organ weights .
This study Aimed at investigating the potential effects of pax herbal bitters on Body weight,body length,thoracic circumference,Abdominal circumference, body mass index and relative organ weight of male albino Wistar rats particularly when they are exposed to high fructose diet . The experiment lasted for 8 weeks (56 days). The male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups Group 1,2,3&4:The control group (Fed with a normal food and normal water ),The negative control group (fed with a high fructose feed and fructose water ), The treatment group (fed with a high fructose feed and fructose water and administered Atorvastatin)and The experimental group (fed with a high fructose feed and water and administered pax herbal bitters).
The result of the experiment highlighted that a high fructose diet significantly led to a decrease in body length,body weight and abdominal circumference .The result also showed that a high fructose diet caused a Insignificant decrease in Body mass index while thoracic circumference was not affected.The result of the experiment also showed that a high fructose diet significantly led to an increase in relative heart weight and relative kidney weight but led to an insignificant decrease in relative liver weight .
Atorvastatin on the other hand when compared with the negative control group (group 2) from the result, showed that there was a significant increase in body length and abdominal circumference,thoracic circumference was not affected significantly and there was an insignificant decrease in BMI.However there was no difference in relative heart weight,but there was an insignificant decrease in relative liver weight but a significant decrease in the relative kidney weight.
Pax herbal bitters from the result displayed no difference in body length but a significant decrease in thoracic circumference,abdominal circumference and body weight .However an insignificant decrease was shown in Body mass index.
From the result,Paxherbal bitters led to a significant increase in relative heart weight but led to a significant decrease in relative kidney weight and an insignificant decrease in relative liver weight.
