ABSTRACT

Plants have a significant impact on haematology, primarily through their role in providing essential nutrients that affect blood and overall hematological health. This study investigated the effects of a polyherbal formulation containing Curcuma longa, Moringa oleifera, Zingiber officinale, Citrus limon, and Allium sativum on haematological parameters against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced oxidative stress in rats. The rats were randomly divided into six groups with four rats each. Group 1 was administered distilled water only, group 2 and 3 were administered 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg polyherbal tea, group 4 and 5 received 5 mg/kg and 10mg/kg polyherbal tea orally and CCl4 (1 ml/kg) intraperitoneally, and group 6 received CCl4 alone for 14 days. The animals were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected for haematology analysis. There were increase in the level of lymphocyte and monocytes in the group treated with 10mg/kg + CCl4 and CCl4 alone when compared to control group (**P < 0.01). A notable elevation in the level of neutrophils in the group treated with 5 mg/kg + CCL4 was observed when compared with the control group (*P < 0.01). The polyherbal formulated tea also increased the level of eosinophils at a dose level of 10 mg/kg when compared with the control group (*P < 0.05). An augmentation in the level of basophils in the group treated with 5 m/kg +CCl4, and 10 m/kg + CCL4 and CCL4 was evident when compared with the control group (P < 0.01). The polyherbal formulated tea has no significant effects on platelets, red blood cells, haemoglobin, and hematocrit (P>0.05). In conclusion, the polyherbal tea formulation demonstrated protective effects by reducing inflammation, improving erythropoiesis, and supporting platelet production.
